Community Service

Today I was able to go serve at the community food pantry. This is my second time participating at this event. I learned that they see over 500 hundred family's a month with I think is amazing and what a great opportunity this is for the people how really need it to come and get food. The sad thing is that they only get to come once a month, you get alot of food but not enough for a months worth. I can tell its getting closer to the holidays more and more food keeps getting donated which is wonderful I just wish that it would be donated all year around rather than just at the holiday time cause people need to eat all the time not just when it Christmas. But more people feel like giving and are in the holiday spirit this time of year. I am grateful I was able to go serve the community that I live in and make a difference I someone elses life. Merry Christmas to everyone and goodnight.

Colgate

Today we had the Colgate Rep come talk to us, I remember her from last year and all she talked about was Triclcsan and how wonderful of an ingredient it is and they are the only ones that have it in their products. I have always been a Colgate buyer but I really did not know why I just liked the taste. Today she talked about a new product well kinda new  it called sensitive pro relief it was Colgate advantage but they changed the name for a marketing purpose so try and sell more and make consumers buy it cause it look different. I did learn that you have two ways to treat hypersensitivity one to occlude the tubules and that is in office but only lasts a short time so that's why you want to use a potassium nitrate to help prevent the sensitivity from returning and if you keep using the colgate pro relief this will do it for you other wise one the tubules are no longer occluded then the sensitivity will return.   I actually really liked what she had to say and i will keep it in mind for future knowledge.

CA at the VA

I would rather be cleaning a patients teeth instead of charting it makes for along day at the Va the best part is that we get to go lunch and the other good part is this is my last day in slc for a whole month horray!!!! and that is great driving down her lately has been nuts crazy driving condition today was so foggy until we hit ogden so the rest of the drive was great. i got to practice the psa and I think I am starting to really get the angle better now katie was nice to show us how today I think I just over think myself so then I mess up the angle but hopefully I can practice this next week at the clinic and pass off me Pe since it is the last day to do it. lets pray i can pass it off and I have a patient that really needs it. I have really noticed how much faster we are getting at the va and wsu its amazing we are getting so good way to go us!!!! happy thanksgiving everyone lets eat turkey:)

VA day

Va was good and bad today. the good day of it i was able to give an injection for dr. fisher and i got two panos and a few PA's that is the good new now the bad I seen two more 1B's suckie!!!!!! I really have seen way to many 1b's I am like at 40 plus quads  and their is nothing i can really do about it cause you get what you get. one reason why seen one b's is good is that is what i will most likely going to see in private practice. but no spots missed and lots of xrays and really nice patients so it was a good day just wish I could have seen harder patients.

Lab

Materials lab was really fun today I got to make bleach trays and I have done this before but I have never used block out and I think that is a really good idea cause then the bleach sit in those area where the block out was at what a good idea. then I also learned to get a wet paper towel and dab the material once it has sucked down I guess it give it the contour, not really sure if it mad a difference  or not but good idea I also learned how to make a temporary from a little prefab clear thing and then you trim it to the right height and fill it with the material one thing I didn't like was that it look along time to set up and in a real office i think that would take to long to do it that way, but if you didnt have a tooth to take an impression of then this would work great but takes awhile.  overall I learned alot and had a fun time.

NO MORE 1 B'S  I HAVE SEEN 4 PATIENTS THIS WEEK THAT WERE A 1 B;( AND I HAVE A FEELING THAT I WILL BE SEEING EVEN MORE BEFORE THE SEMESTER IS OVER. NOT GOOD, NOT GOOD! WELL FOR SOME REASON TODAY IN CLINIC I USUALLY STRUGGLE ON THE LOWERS WELL TODAY IT WAS JUST THE OPPOSITE NUMBER 14 WAS THE END OF ME TODAY I MISSED THE SAME SPOT ON BOTH OF MY PATIENT SO AT THE END I TOLD THEM THAT I HAD TO GET THIS DOWN TODAY WHAT I WAS DOING WRONG SO I CAN FIX IT. I LEARNED THAT I NEED TO SWOOP THE BARNHART TO BETTER ACCESS THIS AREA. SO THE GOAL FOE NEXT WEEK IS TO SWOOP MORE SO I NEVER MISS IT AGAIN.

Mockboard #1

As the day started I was nervous not because I was worried about my patient coming cause they called two times the day before so I knew they would come,  but for the fact that I am still needing help with instrumentation and I may just fail and today would tell me where I really need to improve on. You would think that would not make me nervous knowing where improvement was needed but it did. I was student examiner first and i didnt know how to chart the calculus and was way confused but I figured it out after we were done and then when I got to feel to see if she missed spots i was way off and found different spots than her they said that was normal cause students think anything is calculus but it may just be the cej. well the afternoon came and my patient was a half our early bless hearts but at least I knew they were their. I got through the paper work and got my xrays and still had time. horray! I nerves calmed down and I made it through the cleaning and got my results and I passed with 81 % I missed the distals of the molars in the quad so know I know next week that is my focus. I am glad we have theses practice tests to help prepare for the real thing.

Childrens Health connection day 2

The day was busy from the start with more kids and less volunteers. children ranging from 2-18 years old it was truly an amazing even and feel so pleased to have taken part of it. knowing that you are dong these children such a favor at have never seen a dentist before. by just giving the opportunity to get comfortable with the dental environment and know that its not scary is do a service to them. I got to do dental hygiene the last half of the day and I only seen 2 kids. but the one really needed sealents and the dentist tried and she just would not let im but after I got done cleaning her teeth we tried for about 30 mins to get her to let up put  theses sealents on her teeth I showed her how it worked and demo on her finger but finally we got one done and then she needed a brake and got one more and then a break but at least she was letting me do them and I didnt care how it took us to get them on we were going to do it cause I knew how much it was going to help her later from getting cavities. so I felt really good that I got all four sealents on and it took forever but we did it and hopefully she wont get a cavity their at least.

Cildrens health connection

WOW it was a long day I was assigned to help in the waiting room and do my research project while the kids waited for treatment. the first of the day was slow but mostly little little kids so no one to really do the research on but I did let the younger children play with the IPADS and one thing we noticed was how quick kids now days can pick up on technology most of the children had never seen a Ipad let alone played with one but its amazing that a four year old can figure it out they may not know the learning behind the game and what it is teaching but they know how to play the game and win. this goes to show us that teaching with a virtual reality gaming system can be beneficial in teaching important concepts.

Cant think of a title

Today in clinic the morning went well seen another class five that was very sweet, he keep telling me how good I was doing I love a patient that give you great remarks.  The afternoon was full of kids seen  two little kids they were so cute  I could not do much on the little boy but I feel like we still accomplished something even though it was a just a ride in the chair and getting tickled with the tooth brush I feel like it is still important to bring them in even if it just a ride in the chair to get them ust to the clinic setting.  We are now in the firth week of school and it is going by so fast. I really enjoy coming to clinic last year I think I was sick everyday that we would see a patient or not. I feel like I am doing really well with scaling and improving each day. every patient I see bring new challenges but they are learning challenges for me.

class 3

Today would have been a good day to take intra oral photos what I didn't think about it tell the appointment was over I seen a very interesting class 3 in the afternoon with tons of calculus it was really cool to see it come all off I know that is sick but if you are a hygiene student you would think the same. and to see the difference from the beginning of the appointment to the end I only did the one quad cause I am going to bring him back for mock boards it will be interesting to see the difference in the tissue in a few weeks.  I hope I stressed the good oral hygiene enough that I will be able to see that change also. but it was a fun day I am tired now but it was worth it seeing what a difference we are making the the appearance of someone mouth just by cleaning them.

Convention

Last year was a surprise I had been to UDA but never gone to UDHA and wow was it different it was so good with wonderful food and great speakers, but I was wowed again this year and it was not a good wow i went friday and was blowed away by the speakers she was rude and inconsiderate she wanted you to participate but then they did she would disagree and argue back with them I was pretty sad leaving the day I felt like that it didnt benefit me and was kinda discussed with the speaker but hopefully next year will be better again:(

VA

The second day at the VA went lots better than the first. I still don't have charting down but its coming along. thanks so much to Jodie  for being the ca today she helped out a ton. I was very luck to have got the patients that I got they were both so nice and were so appreciative of me and what I was doing for them. After today I felt like wow I think I really know what I am kinda doing and its starting to get easier the more and more I do it. after last week I felt like I knew nothing and should try first year again haha not. but by the time this week will be over I feel like I am back up to speed and kinda feel like I am a second year student and am going to be doing this in the real world next year with no instructor to guide me along, that is crazy to think but very exciting at the same time. Today I was able to see the effects of diabetes that it  has on the mouth I was quite amazed that no one had ever told this patient that periodontal disease and Diabetes go hand in hand with each other and by controlling your diabetes it helps reduce the probability of developing periodontal disease. or that if you have periodontal disease it can make it so that your blood glucose is out of normal range too. its amazing that so many things effect the oral cavity. well I learned lots today and hopefully I made a difference in someone Else's life.  

VA

Today at the Va we learned how things run around here. I did not realize how nice and how big this clinic really was, I was really impressed. After lunch I was able to see my first pt of the semester and boy was I nervous cause I had not done this for a whole summer. I have to say I struggled getting back into gear and knowing what to do next One thing that was very interesting was when I opened up the cassette of instrument I really didnt know what to pick up first I knew I had gracey and I figured out what one you use where but I dont think I even picked up the rest of them. This was a good learning experience because when I am out in the real world it will be the same way I could walk into an office and have really new instruments or I could have really old instruments but I was thankful that I was given the instrument that I have for  wsu clinic last year I didnt think that I liked the instrument choice but after being their I really do like my own.

class 2

My sweet sister in law was able to come back in and see me one more time. I seen her in january but was not able to come back in tell now. that is one thing that is hard about the weber state clinic is we are not fast enough to get them all done in one appointment at first so ot takes more time out of the pts day which has kinda been a problem for some. I started of using the ultra sonic slim line it did a wonderful job I did not think I liked the ulra sonic until today because I was having problems with using it and having the right motions it does make it nice since all sides are active so you can use the front back or side. the calc came off so nice I did not even have to scale much on the lower anteiors once I was done. I ws ablr to pass of ultra sonic and universal gald to have those done. this was probably the least hard of a class two I have seen.

4-11-11

Today has been pretty easy I finished off my 1b so I only had one quad to do and I was trying to do it faster so I could be more on scheadule with how long it should take to clean a 1b, It took about 30 mins to scale which is a little slow from what the instructords says we should be doing it, but for me I feel that is about right so I can make sure I am doing a very good job. I did forget my very last PE at home today which is a bummer so I guess Ill be doing it on the last day of clinic. looking back I have really improved and have learned so much from the begining. I hope I dont forget it over the summer what I have learned but people say it is like riding a bike you never forget once you get the hang of it.

class 3 and 1A

Seeing two pt in one day is so crazy I keep telling myself I am never going to do it again but I think it has happened about 3 times this semester. I seen a 1A first he was so cute I was also able to do a selent on him which finished me off with all my sealents. one thing I have improved on is my sealents when I was working in the office I always had a hard time doing them I think it is cause I never knew my chair positions which helps out tons. that is one thing I would like to share with the assistants back at my office It will help them so much they wont have as much back pain. then I was able to see my class three and finish her last quad. I did it in about 45 to 60 mins I felt like this last quad way so much harder than the first three I dont know if it was because I was tired or if it was just rock hard calc. I learned alot and got everything done. yeah

4-4-11

CLass 3  day I was able to scale three quads today. I got to use my graces for the first time I am not so sure what I think about them they are nice that they reach into the pocket but and already have the angle set to you are not adapting as much I was also able to pass off ultra sonic sub I feel that it worked very well today I also tired using th eorangle tip the triple bend ultra sonic tip I am not sure about that one cause it was so large and hard to get into the interproximal I love the slim line cause it is so small but I can see when It is good to use the triple bend one instead to remove heavy calc.  it was also easier to know when you missed a spot cause the tissues are not so tight you can get into the col easier. but all in all it was a productive day.

3-30-11

WOw I feel good!!! I got lots done today I seen a class one B and got her done with no errors horray!!!! and I was able to pass off air powder polishing and sealant PE yeah I really need to get them done I am getting alot closer on my PE's and am way over on one B's but thats okay my goal for the next week is finish my class 3 and get anterior pe done and ultasonic sub and also area specific done on monday this is high expectations but I really hope I can get it done then I will very proud. today went very well I timed myself on each quad so I knew how long it was taking me to clean each one. it was about 20 mins each so I think that is okay for now. well good luck to me next week and I hope I get everything done I want to.

Family DAy

I love my SIster !!!! she was a life saver and came in on short notice thanks sis. the plan was to try and do anterior scaling for my PE but she was clean as a wisssel I was very proud of her!! for thaking such good care of her teeth. today went very well I did and od and scaled all her teeth and only missed two spots. I am sure it helped that she practicaly had noe calc to start with. I was alot more relaxed today cause it was my sister but every one say its your family that is always the hardest but in my care that was not true. I am glad it was a great day my hands are a little sore and I am not sure why I might be holding the instrument a little to tight. oh no

senior peer pal

I have the best peer pal ever!! I got very luck with my peer pal he has been so helpful to me this whole year. He would do anything he could to help me out. Well today I was able to have a great learning experience with him in my chair I think every junior should clean their peer pals teeth. one because they know what they are doing and able to give great advice to help you out. I liked that if I was doing something wrong he could tell and help me fix it. It was like having an instructor with you all day right by your side. so for me this was the best learning experience of the year, even though he was an easy one B. I was also able to pass of the intra oral camera which by the way is so hard it is like every time I would get the tooth on the screen to where I want it it would move. it is kinda like looking in a mirror doing something it all backwards.

1B Day

Today Was pretty relax of a day my pt was so sweet and just a great pt you wish every day could go a smooth. I think that the day all depends on the pt. if they really dont want to be in the chair then that is kinda how the day goes. so since my sweet pt really likes to take care of her teeth it made it really easy to help her improve little things to help her out just a little bit more. my goal for the week is pass of ultra sonic and universal sub this will be for monday when I see my class 2. but today is the last day before spring break so I am in spring break mode and am done thinking about clinic for a week that is going to be a great break.

cold sore

my plan for the day was to finish my one quad of a one B and then also do a removable applinace. well nothing ever seems to work out the way you want it to. my one B had a cold sore that ahe just got last night so it was very small but I noticed it and told her we would have to rescheadule her she was not happy with the instructor or me I felt really bad I understand why we can see them but I think that if we tell them why we dont recommened seeing them and what could happen I still think that it is their body and they should be able to decide if they would like to risk it or just come back. caus shw was not happy:( the removable appliance went well but it is really ard to take a pano on someone who does not have any teeth. I also passed off blood gluclose test. yeah 2 PE's done only 7 more to go.

Crazy day!!

What a day it was!! I seen a two year old and then a 1b. my little two year old was so cute he did not want to open his mouth for me at all so we just tried to make it a fun experience for him I gave him a ride in the chair and he played with the little mirror and we got to tickle his front teeth with our cool cars tooth brush he tough that was the greates thing ever having a mater on his tb, then I was able to see his mom after and yeah I got my first pano horray!!I could tell she was stress about having her kids thier running around cause her husband was getting his teeth cleaned also. we took lots of potty breaks but we mae it through I got 3 quads done so she will have to come back for 20 more mins and I finish her up. my goal for the next week is to pass off 4 pe's I am way behind. i am also seeing a denture pt on monday so that will be a good experience.

class III horray!!

What a day I think I all most always say this every time I blog clinic must go about the same every week. I feel like one day I am doing really well and then the next day I feel like I have no idea what I am doing. my mother in law was able to coem be my pt today it was quite alearning experience seein what a class 3 really looks like and how amazing it is to see that probe sink to 8mm wow! I took a full mouth with schick I and only had one retake I was pretty amazed with myself. I was not able to scale any quads but I was able to do a gross debribement I know we are not suppost to but they told me to just so it would be alearning experience for the pt to feel how much was really on their after I ultrasonicd it off. I really liked using the ulrasonic I have not had much success with it on other pt and i think that is just because they may not of ahd really that much cal that I could really see if it was working correctly but I sure could tell today. I also seen pus that was gross when I was probing and I really could not smell perio breath but I could today yikes. my goal with this pt is to try and get two quads done at her next appt I hope I can good luck to me:)

IB day

My goal for toady was get through an OD, take x-rays and scale 2-3 quads. I want to get myself so that I can do a 1b in one appointment I got really close I finished 2 quads and almost finished the third one but ran out of time I felt bad cause I know that she did not want to come back really bad but I sould only take me about 45mins to finish. I told myself that I need to start exploring more and feeling for the calculus and then scale that way I can get more done and I wont be so worn out cause I am scraping on every tooth so much. so that is my goal for the next week and get through a 1b appointment from start to finish in one day. I also want to try and pass 2-3 PE's off next week. one thing I have noticed that I need to work on is that I need more lateral pressure I was scaling a lower anterior forever and the calculus was not coming off and my hands were so tired I just could not get it off. so some how I need to use more pressure and use my wrist more and not my finger.

LAB

We had a lab day today it was really nice not to worry about getting a patient for today. but I did learn some valuable Pe's today We learn ow to clean dentures also we learned gluclose testing and that your patient does not have to have diabetes to take their gluclose test but they could also check thier sugar level on patients that may have not ever had it check before. mine was good it was 100 and they say 80 to 120 is normal. I also learned how to do the Diagnodent I have never used this piece of equipment before but if you use it correctly it would be benificial in detecting a suspicious area that may be of concern. but one think you have to remember is that you have to reset it if you get a high reading before moving to the next tooth. my goal for next week is to through an od take x-rays and scale two quads.

A Family Day

I was able to finish my niece today I di one quad last week and finished the other three off today. she told me that I was doing alot better today than I did last week. so that tells me that I am making improvement. Calc is so hard to get off on some teeth but then on other teeth it comes off really easily. I was also able to pass off my selective polishing PE so I have another one done. one thing I want to try and improve on for this month is staying up on my folcrum I have a problem with laying up on it cause I want to lay it down so that is my goal for the month.

class 2 pt day

I am very proud of myself today I finished my class two patient today all four quads. I got lucky because my patient was missing a few teeth that is why I think I was able to finish scaling in one appt. and I only had two spots of calculas which where on the lower anteriors I always seem to missed spots in that area. I was also able to pass of my posterior scaling and I am starting to feel more comfortable with posterior scaling. I also tried using the triple bend I did not really like it I think I like the slim line the best. my goal for next week is to pass off sharpening and also selective polishing. and I plan to finish my one B pt on moday.

why do mondays have to be so hard?????

Today was a little difficult I was faced with a harder patient but it was still only a one B, I thought I had seen gingivitis before but not tell today did I really see what gingivitis was. I felt really bad I felt like if I even looked at the gums they would bleed. and it was really hard when your pt has alot of decalification  knowing is that really decalification or calculus i though I knew the difference but I guess not. I feel like the charting is getting really easy and going through the OD is taking a lot less time but now I am starting to struggle more in scaling I dont feel like our instructors have enough time for us. cause I think I am doing it right but then someone comes by for two seconds and im doing it wrong but dont have time to sit with me for five minutes. I am getting really nervous about getting my PE's done cause we never have time to do them. ahh well my goal for the week is to pass off universal scaling and possibly sharpening.

family day

Today was another family day, my brother in law came to support me this week. I was able to finish all four quads just in time. I was hoping to get a little faster this week but have stayed about the same. I wish that we had more time with our instructors cause we all need help in someway but do not have enough instructors for that to happen. I tried using the ultrasonic I felt like I was doing okay with it but I had two spots of tissue trama on the linguals I dont think I know how to angle it the right direction I wil need to work on it. that will be the goal for next week to get two PE's done and practice using the ultrasonic the correct way. I was also able to finish off my CA assignments I think I was mastered front office, but that may be the only thing I have mastered.

monady

Why do monday have to be so crazy????????? my patient showed up 45 mins late today so I was rushed to get the OD done. I have decided that it is going to be hard to get my shick requirements for x-rays since we only have one sensor between the two rooms. I had planned on using shick but when I got in there and all set up someone else was using it so I went with scan x. I have also noticed that it is sometimes  hard to notice if some one is a class one or a class two if they are just kinda boarder line. cause they have a few deep pockets but may not have the calc necessay to make it a class two. so two days pt I tought he was a class one but he turned out being a one on top and a two on bottom. so it made my perio statement a little harder it was generalized marginal gingivits i thought would would have to say mild periodontitis but I guess you dont. goal for the week get four quads done and possible a PE.

Great Day

Today was very productive I was able to finish my patient today, yeah that makes two complete three complete pts for the semester!!! I scaled my first quad in just over ten minutes which was amazing timing for me anyways, I felt like I really actually know how to do a 1B patient now. I also passed off my anterior instrument PE. my goal is to pass off two pe's a week. and get faster at doing my od appointments. oh I also used the best instrument today for the first timeit is called the mcall it was so nice to get the posterior teeth.

Class 1A

Wow what a work out today!! I seen a 1A  so was so adorable she is only 3 years old and I was able to take bite wings on her, the first round was kinda hard she kept kicking the xray out with her tongue. but the roller where dirty dang conventional films. so we had to do retakes I felt so bad cause by then she was about really to go home and we had not even started the cleaning yet. so we did retakes and they turned out beautiful. she told me that she was going to be a good girl so that I could get a good grade!! I thought that was so cute. so I could not really scale her teeth so I mostly just used the tb and paste to get the plaque off which worked really well for a three year old, my ohi was more aimed to the parent making sure she knows how to floss and brush really well so that she is not getting cavitys in her little teeth. parent really was interested in how much plaque that was on her childs teeth parent was will ing to start helping her child brush since child can not reall ydo it her self. very cute pt but I got a work out, and no fingure bites yeah!!!

Jan 19th

some times I feel really bad for the people that do not take care of their teeth. I understand why people dont see the dentist cause it coss money but brushing and flossing costs like nothing it practically free dentistry. cause they dont realize if they would just take care of their teeth now before they get worse then it would not cost them so much in the long run... that my thoughts anyway!! I seen a class two witch could really be a class three in half of the mouth but oh well. the calculus was so thick on her linguals and she ad so much demineralization it was amazing i wanted to jsut get in their and start chipping it away but that will be for next time i was able to take some PA's today and also pass off my  sub explorer pe.

jan 12

One more day tell my birthday!!! conventional takes so long to process with the new daylight loader that is attatched to the processor it is really hard to see what you are doing plus I have to stand on a step stool to see in. My pt teeth were amazing today I dont think I have seen someones teeth so clean and someone that really cares about them and how they are taking care of them. I was very impressed with her. I also passed of my explorer to instructor hafen is so helpful.

class 2 pt day

today was a big learning experience for me, I have been seeing pts that are very healthy and have only been class 1b which has made it really easy for me. today I had more of a challenge I had a feeling that my pt may end up being a class 2 but I still dont know exactly how to know when I have a class two mouth, so I wrote down 1b cause I was not forsure, but then I should have went with my first instinct and wrote down class 2 and i would have been right. oh well I hope ill know for next time. I did have success with my xrays I took 4 bite wings and 3 PA's and they turned out really well with no retakes. one thing that I am learning is that sometimes I think it would be easier to see people that I dont know that way I could just educate them and hope that they walk away knowing more than they came with and that by what I teach them they will put to use and I will start see an effect on their mouth when I see them again in 6 months. but with family it is hard. you try to teach them but you know them so well that you know when they are truely listening and caring for what you have to say. so that is why I think that it may be easier to work on someone other than family. today was a learning experience for me and i hope that next time I will know more what to do and what to look for so that when I get an od check I will be correct and she wont have to help me out as much. my goal for wed is to pass off explorer PE and probe a little faster.

real pt day again

oh wow today was so hard I seen scotty today he is such a good sport I feel like I still am not quite doing it righ I reall struggled with knowing how to scale the upper righ quad I could not remember how to scale the right way. I got all four quads done with some time to spare but I had missed five areas which kinda mad me upset I just dont feel like I know how to use the barnhart and need practice but it is hard to practice on a type odont  so I really need a real patient. I hope I start to feel more comfortable as time goes on.

1st day of spring semester

Today was A shocker to come back and know that I do remember what I lerned last semester. although I was a little scared that I had forgot but by the end of clinic my back and wrists where aching I guess I lost the muscle I had gained in thouse areas over the break. we learned a little more ablot the ultrasonic and then we learned how to use our graceys but i think I it is hard to remember what grace you use on the distal and what one you use on the mesial. but I think it is one/two  is for the anteriors and then 15/16 on the mesials and then 13/14 on the distals may need to lable them so I can remember for the first little while.
