Emer day

Today was kinda long we did not do much today we learned how to be a CA and what to do if we had an emergency situation what would be the plan and how to handle a stat situation. we also took the clinic manual test and with that I did not have to look up everything so that was a good sign that I knew the information. we also talked about what the plan is for this next semester. and also had a relection on how well we thought that we preformed on our real patient day. so we went through each step on the dental chart and wrote down how we felt we did and how we could improve.

Real Patient Day

I was able to work on my sweet husband today, he is such a trooper for volunteering to be picked on by someone that does not know what they are doing. jk but he was kinda confused on what i was doing with the probe, he keep telling me that he has never had this done before and that he is glad his hygientist does not do it to him or else if she did he would find a new one. I just keep my thoughts to myself but tonight we will have a discussion on why it is important to probe im sure he will very intersted:) today went okay the flow did not go great we where why behind getting into the xray room i was all the why done with my OD before we got to take xray, then I had to take two retakes both of my pre molars where over lapped. I was thankful to of had Vining  in the room to help out I think it might me crazy when we have to go look for an instructor to get the okay. then we where able to do OHI I love to see the reactions on pts faces when they see how much plaque they have on their teeth, it a big motivator to the pt that they either need to change the way they are brushing or just need some modifications to their current brushing habits. charting took a little longer than expected but i guess with time it will get faster. overall to day went very well.

Another Relax day

Today I was the Patient again you would be surprised at how much you learn from just being the patient I watched through the mirror the whole time I was curious to see how to use the ultra sonic on my braces. I still think that if I had a patient with braces I would rather use the ultra sonic instead of the air powered polisher. brooke did an amazing job she is going to make a great hyginest. and I also like to be able to fell what my patients go through, I now realize that holding your mouth open for two hours is the most tiring thing ever and your jaw gets really sore if you dont give them a brake so they can rest.

Relax day!!

Today I was able to just sit in the chair and do nothing it was awesome I could have fell asleep, mu operator was really good and probing only hurt a few times. I did find out that I mite have two cavity which I am not happy about, I guess that is waht school does to you cause you have to eat so many sweet to function. I also passed off my last PE it felt amazing to have them all done. the PE was sharpening which I still dont feel totally confident with but It will come with time. I liked bieng the pt just to see kinda where I am at with knowledge and compare with others so that was good to see that we are both on the same page as in time it takes and what we know

11-10-10

Today I was able to scale the whole mouth I was also able to use the Ultra sonic which
I totally loved it I it worked awesome. It was good to go in an order as I was scaling I have always just jumped around when we where practicing. but I can totally see why going in an order is very helpful or else you may end up skipping a tooth surface. I really like using the ultra sonic I can see how that can save my life when I get a patient with lots of calculus. I twill save alot of time, one thing i did learn today is that charting takes so much time and if you are rushed to get out of clinic it makes it even more stressful. I also learned today how to chart xrays and that xray can fall any where after your hhxrx. I am getting rally excied for real patient day I am feeling more confident in what I am going after this week.

Mock pt Day

WOw I survived mock pt day, I was stressed all weekend long and then I got going on my pt and it was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. what took the longest was probing the full mouth but I feel better about probing now that I was able to do a full mouth on a pt. I only got though the OHI and did not make it to scaling today but that will be wed. I found out that I need to be a little faster at going through the differnt steps but I did pretty well for bing my very first real pt.

Sharpening

Today we learned how to sharpen instruments, its not to hard if you understand the angles of the instrument and the stone. we where also given little laminated sheets to help us get the angles, I dont feel like I really need to use it I think I have the concept down. today was way productive I was able to pass of three PE's Air powered polishing which was so much better this day than ever before, we also did flouride PE I really like the varnish better than the foam and I like that I can feel it on my teeth cause then I think it makes the pt feel like it is actually doing something. and then we did the Walk out PE and that is so easy. Im staring to feel really comfortable with everything. so bring on monday I am the operator first next week so it is going to be a good experience.

Monday

today in clinic I was able to pass of selective polish it was so easy, I feel like I have got the hang of it since I have only been doing it for four years in private practice, One thing is that I know now than I may of been going just a little to fast but now I know to keep it below 10 rpms I also got to practice my air powered polishing agian not sure If  I am getting any better but Ill keep practicing.

Polishing Day

Wow so I have never used the air powered polisher before and so today was a first and it was nor plesant I hated it. it was so painfull I would hate to have it done to all of my teeth if I needed it. but I love the selective polisher it is so nice compaired to the air powered one. so yesterday I did not know that you only polish the teeth that need to be polished so that was new to me, I have always just polished every pt so matter what so I am glad I learned this today and in class yesterday.

10-25-10

Today in clinic it was a more of a practice day than anything which is always wonderful we also passed of OHI pe and intra oral camera. I feel like I really understand how to explain in lamens terms what a cavity is and the formation and process the tooth goes through. but when it comes to Periodontitis it is a little harder for me to explain to someone what periodontitis actually is and to know how to incorporate the flip chart in to my explanitation of what it really is. I love the intra oral camera it is great for the pt to see what the inside of thier mouth really lookes like. i know in private practice it would have been nice to get to use it more but we never made time to actually use it. so that is what I hope to do when I start seeing pts 

Wed

What a day i was able to pass off four PE"S it was nuts I totally feel like I understand the how to scale posterior teeth last week I hated using the barnhart but now I feel like I understand how to use it thanks to instuctor Hafen she helped me out a ton. know I get into the col which before, I know I was not getting the col, well I got to practice more today which is always good. well that it for today

Monday Oct 18

All I did today was sit in the chair and be the patient, it was really long and I kinda got light headed being down that long, but one good thing is that we did ohi again today and my PFI was tons better than from last time so that makes me feel good now I know that the way I am brushing is the correct way. yeah that is so exciting. well wed I will be working on a patient for the entire time im glad we are getting to be able to actually run through a procedure like we would normally do. well that it for today on to radiology.

Wed Clinic

SO WHAT I LEARNED TODAY WAS HOW TO CHART OND TRANSFER TO THE PT CHART IT TAKES ME BACK TO WHEN I WAS IN DENTAL ASSISTING SCHOOL AND CHARTING ON PAPER IM NOT UST TO THAT ANY MORE. I ALSO WAS ABLE TO FULL UNDERSTAND THE PROBING CONCEPT AND NOW I FEEL SO MUCH BETTER ABOUT IT. AND THEN WE WHERE ABLE TO PRACTICE ON EACH OTHER I MOST PRACTICED USING MY ANTERIOR SCALER AND I AM FEELING SO MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE ABOUT DOING IT. WELL THIS IS THE END OF THE WEEK FOR US AND I AM SO EXCITED CAUSE IT IS FALL BREAK. YEAH!!!!

Disclosing Agent

Wow I could not believe what I saw when we did disclosing agent I thought I was a some what good brusher but after disclosing I found aout that I really need to improve on my brushing technique in the anterior region of my mouth. you would think that I would be a good brusher in the front because they are easy to reach and floss and the back are alot harder to get to but come to find out my posterior teeth looked awesome hardly any pink spots. so my goal for this week is to bush in those spots better and then disclose again in a couple weeks and see if I have improved.

Barnhart day

Today we learned how to use thwe barnhart in the posterior teeth, I thought it was way easy on my typodont and was doing the right strokes but then poor mollee I got to work on her again this week and to start I hurt her a few times and made her bleed but by the need we had a lot less bleeding. so yeah me. we also learned how to treatment plan on eagle soft which was way easy and came naturally. so at least one thing came easy this week. well the clinic week in over so I have got to practice like crazy this weekend.

wow im so stressed

Wow im am so stressed out so today we learned how to use the sickle scaler it was so hard I m trying not to get frustraited but It is kinda hard I think I am getting it and then an instructor comes over and I m not doing it correct Im so glad we have them to help us. prof Coastly is amazing at teaching us how to do it correctly she takes your hand is so gentle and I totally understand that one tooth when she gets done. I wish she could be by my side that whole time. Well I am going to take home my scaler and practive like crazy and try not to stress about it, it is only the first day of scaling.

A Good Day

Today has been a good day I got to sleep in and lay around in my pjs before I came to school. so then I came to clinic and learned more about adapation, angulation and  activation. I was not really sure what these terms ment or how they applied untail today. and I think I am starting to seeing the 70 degree angle that I am suppost to be using. I also passed off my intra oral exam. and now its time to go home I m so excited.

2 days later

I have the hardest time rembering to blog. so this blog today is for what I learned how to do on mondays clinic. on monday we learned how use are explorer and explore around someone in our pod. I felt really bad for adrienne because I was her pt and I have braces so It way making it even harder for her to explore. she only made be bleed once so she did a good job. then I got to explore her mouth and pocked her a few time too so I guess you could say I git her back. I felt like exploring was a little harder than the probing concept. well that it for now.

Today in clinic I passed off my health history PE I cant even tell you how thankful I am to have it over with. it was not as bad as I thought It was going to be I think after doing the huge case study I felt like I knew alot more and felt more comfortable with being able to pass the health history. but I am truly glad to have it done with.

mondays ahhh

toady we learned how to do an intra oral exam, so inside the mouth. I am kinda slow at doing extra and intra oral just cause I am still learning the different landmarks but with time I will get faster. we also had a guest speaker she was so nice today and at convention they talked alot about us being members of our assocaition. which makes since why not be member if you truley love your profession the number amase me. well that it for today on to radiology class....

Fulcrum Day

Today in clinic we learned how to do an extra oral exam and also we learned how to fulcrum on something. I really like do the exam part of the screening I learnd how to kinda do it at the womens helath clinic which was way fun by the way. I feel like I really understand the extra oral exam lot more now then I did at the health clinic. I actually know aht I am looking for and feeling for. it was a good day:)

Clinic

Today in clinic we learned the right way to take blood pressures. I have know how to take BP for along time but I was taught a little different I was not taught to pump it up and feel for the pulse to stop first and then let it out again and wait 30 secs. pump it back up and go 20 over of what your number was when you did it the first time. this makes total since to me I wish I was taught this along time ago.

Health historys (AHHH)

So after clinic was over today I was totally lost. I never thought a health history would have to be so confusing. to tell you the truth I think I only remember a 1/3 of what I learned today, that is not good!. Well I guess it will come with time and practice doing them. oh one bonus for me today was that I already knew how to take vital signs so that  was nice. well I am going to try a link both of my blogs together I hope it works.

Another Day.

My laptop in my unit was down on wed afternoon so I could not blog right after clinic so here i am doing it now so I dont forget what  I learned in clinic. Wed was awesome I actually learned something new. I learned the clock position from 8-12 oclock and what teeth you could scale sitting at each of the different positions. I was so excited about this concept because I am not starting to feel like a real hygienist. all night long all that I could think about was teeth and if I was scaling toward or away and what clock time would I be sitting at. by 1030 at night i was staring to get annoyed with myself but I just could not get it out of my mind. so next wed here I come I know my PE inside and out and could do it with my eyes closed.

Wk 2 of school 13 more to go

I cant believe its already monday again!! Where did the weekend go???? I had a good time in clinic today we learned about exposure control set up and take down. and then we got to work on someone in our pod my pt was Adrienne she is so cute im glad we get to sit next to each other. I have decided that I like the blue boa but I thought I would like the curly suction, which I do but on on a typodont. I think the candy cane suction is more comfortable and stay in the mouth better on a real live pt. I also thinkit is alot harder learning a PE on wed and then hafting to wait tell monday of the next week to pass it off, I would rather learn it on monday and pass it off on wed then it is fresh on my mind. but I guess I cant always have it the easy way. HaHA!!

Day 2 of CliniC

Today has been a good day, We had the morning off and had clinic in the afternoon. I remembered all the things I need today so I guess you could say I was more prepared. Clinic was actually really fun today we got to use our typodonts and our cool blue boas which I totally love!! I think it works great to keep the mouth dry, it was really hard to hold my HVE in my left hand I am so not ust to that it is going to take some practice to get that down. Oh I  also passed off my first PE which is awesome. well that is about it for today.

First day at school

Wow what a day it has been, It all started off by me lossing my keys right in time for me needing to leave to come to school. then I left my Process Evaluations at home and I needed them for clinic. luckly Prof Coastly was nice about it. Well the rest of clinic went really good, I think I am going to love school. Yeah I am so excited to be here.!!!!
